OPTIMIZING WORKFLOWS FOR A GLOBAL MATERIAL SCIENCES COMPANY
Workplace and lab strategies for three relocation projects: Korea & Taiwan
GOALS
Relocating two R&D labs and this company’s Taiwan headquarters from outdated facilities provided opportunities to improve productivity and innovation.
Therefore, a key focus of these three strategies was creating physical adjacencies to optimize workflows within labs and between write-up & lab activities. Adjacencies were also informed by engineering challenges presented by the future spaces’ capabilities to support the needed lab equipment.
APPROACH
A rapid engagement approach (leader interviews, expert observations, lab equipment reviews and engineering integration site visits) enabled the quick identification of workflows, lab requirements and how to improve the headquarter functions for the Taipei office.
OUTCOMES
The resulting strategy for the Korea research-and-development lab planned in flexibility for 10-year headcount growth without losing spatial efficiency from Day One. In Taiwan, the workplace strategy aimed to attract younger generations while being mindful of the preferences of older generations, and included guidance on the customer experience for visitors starting with a customer innovation zone display area at reception.
