  • ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION BRIEF FOR THREE CAMPUS BUILDINGS

Workplace-driven brief for Phase Two of a pharmaceutical corporate campus in Shanghai

    GOALS

The primary goal of this project was to create an architectural brief to be issued to a short-list of architects to design three new buildings in the next phase of development for this corporate campus. Two buildings were to be planned and designed for flexible use as lab and/or workplace, and the third to accommodate a restaurant and multifunctional innovation center.

The brief and competition designs needed to continue the reputation of high-quality architecture in Phase One of the campus development. Due to the campus’ somewhat remote location, the workplace and visitor experience had to be elevated to attract and retain staff.

    APPROACH

The architecture was to be planned from the inside out. In other words, the workplace experience and functionality were to drive the design of the buildings rather than the buildings driving the experience.

A rapid engagement approach (senior stakeholder interviews and on-site expert observations) was taken to evaluate the performance of Phase One and the vision for Phase Two in the creation of a holistic campus experience. This also entailed the undertaking of an amenities study to define a campus-wide amenities strategy, accounting for the campus neighborhood and existing campus facilities.

    OUTCOMES

A detailed architectural brief was developed with comprehensive space programming including all spaces (workplace, amenities, workplace support spaces, public space, circulation, building support spaces, plant and technical spaces, hygiene spaces, restaurant front- and back-of-house spaces, etc.).

The resulting architectural brief created an integrated strategy for the entire campus, and established flexibility to implement the three buildings simultaneously or sequentially while maintaining a great user experience, depending how funding was deployed.
