  • CREATING A NEW AIRPORT SECURITY HUB IN EAST ASIA

Workplace and operations hub strategy for security and technical teams

    GOALS

This Strategic Brief was for the interior design of a new seven-story building. The building is to initially house two different entities: the airport’s security organization on the lower floors and the airport authority’s engineering and technology departments on the upper floors, plus shared space for all authority teams.

A key goal of the project was consolidation of the airport’s various security operations that are currently distributed across the site into a central hub, while managing the flow of +1,350 security officers and improving their day-to-day experience.

    APPROACH

The research-based approach included senior leadership interviews and workshops, as well as extensive on-site observations across different airport buildings, landside and airside. A key part of the research was understanding all the airport’s different security operations and the relationship between different operations, functions and spaces.

    OUTCOMES

The Strategic Brief document includes a project vision; key workplace principles; a menu of work settings; space budget options; a vertical stacking diagram; floor plan zoning diagrams; functional adjacency planning; security hub space planning; test fits; and recommendations on technology and usage protocols.

The Menu of Spaces is articulated as proto-room data sheets with a description of the functionality, layout, proposed furniture, equipment, technology & AV requirements and acoustic performance. This level of detail gives sufficient information to the architectural and IT teams to plan their designs more expediently.

The security operations hub design is efficient and offers a modernized experience for security staff with spaces for relaxation before and after their shifts or during breaks. The workplace has plentiful work settings for pin-up and layout space for the technical teams to manage large paper drawings. Moreover, the workplace has been designed to be flexible to change to accommodate other airport authority teams in the future if needed.

    Construction completed in 2022.
