ALIGNING WORK CULTURE TO BRAND AT A MAJOR KOREAN COSMETICIS COMPANY
Workplace strategy, change management and POE services for a new Seoul HQ
GOALS
The construction of a new headquarters building created an opportunity to align this company’s ways of working with its ambitious organizational vision and brand identity focused on beauty, openness and innovation. The company’s massive investment aimed to keep its leading position in the global market by supporting staff to work more effectively, increase product sales and generation, while also boosting staff wellness.
APPROACH
The consultancy scope reflected the integrated complexity of a workplace project, focusing on change management (the people) as well as advising on improvements to the workplace design (the place), wellness facility planning, operations consulting and service design (performance).
The process started with the organization’s people, through executive interviews, an employee survey, workshops and expert observations to confirm the workplace vision and find ways to better align the design and work processes to that vision. Coupled with this on-site research, was extensive trends analyses and benchmarking visits to ensure that the workplace design was elevated to global standards.
Despite joining the project after the concept design for the workplace was completed, improvements were made to better assist staff to collaborate more easily. For change management, acknowledging the current hierarchal work culture in Korea, a multitrack engagement plan was developed with an emphasis on two main audiences: 1. on executives and department leaders to effect top-down change (including a 130-person leadership workshop on new ways of working), and 2. a train-the-trainer approach was used to engage with the large number of staff.
OUTCOMES
The consultancy team became a holistic advisor for the workplace, supporting the client delivery teams (general office affairs, FM, IT) to position them to achieve a successful change to new ways of working. There was minimal interruption to work during the transition to the new headquarters building and staff were generally satisfied with the new environment.
A post-occupancy study (POE) addressing challenges around office tidiness proposed minor spatial interventions, behavioral changes (with a method for engagement) and operational solutions to address these challenges.
